Los preparados enzim\u00e1ticos comercializados hasta la fecha, aunque son eficaces en el control biol\u00f3gico del pitch en con\u00edferas, no rinden buenos resultados en las maderas de frondosas. Este hecho motiv\u00f3 la b\u00fasqueda de una enzima capaz de degradar los compuestos involucrados en la formaci\u00f3n de dep\u00f3sitos en estas especies vegetales. Estudios preliminares pusieron de manifiesto la actividad enzim\u00e1tica del hongo o.Piceae sobre \u00e9steres de p-nitrofenol y oleato de colesterilo. \u00e9ste \u00faltimo fue escogido como modelo de los \u00e9steres de esteroles presentes en los extra\u00edbles de la madera de eucaliptus globulus, especie empleada mayoritariamente en espa\u00f1a para la producci\u00f3n de pasta de papel.     inicialmente se estudiaron varias actividades enzim\u00e1ticas, utilizando un medio basal que conten\u00eda glucosa, como fuente de carbono y aceite de oliva como inductor. En estas condiciones, se purific\u00f3 y caracteriz\u00f3 una \u00fanica enzima. \u00e9sta mostraba una elevada afinidad sobre triglic\u00e9ridos y \u00e9steres de esteroles. La degradaci\u00f3n de mezclas complejas de estos compuestos, presentes en los extra\u00edbles y pastas de papel de diferentes especies vegetales, evidenciaron la posible aplicaci\u00f3n de la esterasa en el control biol\u00f3gico del pitch en madera de frondosas y con\u00edferas.     la determinaci\u00f3n del extremo n-terminal de la prote\u00edna y p\u00e9ptidos internos, resultado de la hidr\u00f3lisis de la misma, permitieron obtener una sonda de dna espec\u00edfica. De esta forma, se pudo llevar a cabo la secuenciaci\u00f3n del gen de la esteasa de o.Piceae. La comparaci\u00f3n con los genes de otras esterasas mostr\u00f3 una homolog\u00eda de aproximadamente un 40% con los que codifican las lipasas de candida rugosa y geotrichum candidum. A partir de estos estudios, se pudieron identificar los residuos implicados en la cat\u00e1lisis de la enzima.
