Resulta especialmente relevante cuando el personaje que lo encarga ocupa un puesto de primer orden en la sociedad; tal es el caso del obispo, sobre todo, en los a\u00f1os del gotico, cuando el individuo cobra un mayor protagonismo y desea destacarse, de algun modo, dentro de su grupo. Por ello se ha estudiado la figuera del obispo y su anhelo de inmortalidad dentro de un tiempo y un espacio: la castilla de los trastamara. Epoca de consulsiones que afectan directamente a la iglesia, como el cisma, donde los prelados espa\u00f1oles ocupan un lugar primordial. Su formacion, trayectoria vital, relaciones con el poder, pero tambien su posicion ante la muerte, tendran, muchas veces, su reflejo en los sepulcros.  estos no ofrecen demasiadas variantes tipologicas, aunque si estilisticas, pudiendo adscribirse a corrientes autoctonas y foraneas.
