Diferentes estudios han demostrado la existencia de un incremento de la actividad de algunas prote\u00ednas cdk, especialmente cdk1 y cdk2, en correlaci\u00f3n con la progresi\u00f3n de los primeros estadios de la apoptosis. En nuestro laboratorio el estudio de este proceso en timocitos, o c\u00e9lulas arrestadas en g1 y sin actividad cdk debida al ciclo celular, demuestra que la inducci\u00f3n de la actividad de cdk2 despu\u00e9s del tratamiento con radiaci\u00f3n gamma o  glucocorticoides es necesaria para el inicio de la apoptosis. Mientras ninguna de las ciclinas conocidas parece ser la prote\u00edna activadora de cdk2 en apoptosis, en nuestro laboratorio hemos identificado un nuevo miembro de la familia de las ciclinas, denominado ciclina o, capaz de activar la kinasa cdk2 in vivo en l\u00edneas celulares. La expresi\u00f3n de esta nueva ciclina en el timo, y otros tejidos, se induce r\u00e1pidamente despu\u00e9s del tratamiento con radiaci\u00f3n gamma y coincide con la aparici\u00f3n de la apopt\u00f3sis. Estos resultados posicionan la ciclina o como el mejor candidato a ser el activador de cdk2 necesario para inducir la muerte celular programada en el tiempo, y probablemente tambi\u00e9n en otros
