El mecanismo implicado en su origen no est\u00e1 del todo claro. Se ha propuesto como posibles mecanismos la diferenciaci\u00f3n directa de c\u00e9lulas madre hematopoy\u00e9ticas (cmhs) y\/o fusi\u00f3n celular entre c\u00e9lulas derivadas de cmhs y hepatocitos end\u00f3genos. La frecuencia de aparici\u00f3n de hdmo est\u00e1 relacionada con el modelo estudiado, y var\u00eda seg\u00fan la fuente desde el 30% de todos los hepatocitos a ser un fen\u00f3meno muy escaso.  para estudiar el proceso de generaci\u00f3n de hdmo, se ha desarrollado un modelo en rat\u00f3n, en el que ratones hembra letalmente irradiados fueron trasplantados con c\u00e9lulas de mo de ratones transg\u00e9nicos machos, que expresaban la prote\u00edna verde fluorescente (egfp) bajo el control del promotor ubicuo de la b-actina. despu\u00e9s del establecimiento de la hematopoyesis quim\u00e9rica, los animales fueron inyectados con soluci\u00f3n salina o tetracloruro de carbono (ccl4) para inducir un da\u00f1o hep\u00e1tico similar a una cirr\u00f3sis cr\u00f3nica. En los animales tratados con ccl4 se observ\u00f3 una gran diferencia en los parametros plasm\u00e1ticos y una estructura hep\u00e1tica completamente alterada. Los hdmo se identificaron mediante inmunofluorescencia como c\u00e9lulas egfp+ con morfolog\u00eda de hepatocito, expresando prote\u00ednas espec\u00edficas de hepatocito y no expresando marcadores hematopoy\u00e9ticos; la frecuencia de hdmo en los h\u00edgados da\u00f1ados fue de 1 por 250.000 hepatocitos totales.  posteriormente, se moviliz\u00f3 durante tres semanas con el factor estimulador de colonias de granulocitos (g-csf) o con g-csf\/trombopoy\u00e9tina (tpo) a la mitad de los animales de cada grupo. Una semana m\u00e1s tarde, se sacrificaron los animales y se analiz\u00f3 la presencia de hdmo. La movilizaci\u00f3n con g-csf increment\u00f3 significativamente el porcentaje de hdmo (m\u00e1s de 17 veces) en el h\u00edgado de los animales tratados con ccl4.
