Adem\u00e1s, en el caso de las levaduras, act\u00faa como un sensor de ox\u00edgeno a escala celular e interviene en la regulaci\u00f3n g\u00e9nica dependiente de la disponibilidad de ox\u00edgeno. Por tanto, el hemo es una mol\u00e9cula esencial que, dada su importancia, podr\u00eda ayudar a desentra\u00f1ar el por qu\u00e9 de las diferencias metab\u00f3licas existentes entre las levaduras kluyveomyces lactis y saccharomyces cerevisiae y nos proporcionar\u00eda herramientas para mejorar su explotaci\u00f3n biotecnol\u00f3gica. el gen hem13 de s. Cerevisiae es un gen hip\u00f3xico que codifica la enzima coproporfirin\u00f3geno oxidasa (cpo) que cataliza el sexto paso de la ruta de bios\u00edntesis del grupo hemo. Tanto el gen como la proteina que genera son puntos clave en la regulaci\u00f3n de la s\u00edntesis de hemo en s. Cerevisiae. Por un lado, la cpo es la primera enzima de la ruta que necesita ox\u00edgeno como sustrato en su reacci\u00f3n, de modo que ante una caida de ox\u00edgeno puede convertirse en un cuello de botella para la generaci\u00f3n de hemo (de ah\u00ed que exista una relaci\u00f3n directa entre los niveles de hemo y de ox\u00edgeno) por otro lado, schem13 es un gen hip\u00f3xico, esto es, incrementa fuertemente su expresi\u00f3n en condiciones de hipoxia. En la regulaci\u00f3n de schem13 interviene adem\u00e1s el hemo como iniciador de una cascada reguladora que culmina con la represi\u00f3n aer\u00f3bica o desrepresi\u00f3n hip\u00f3xica del gen. en esta tesis se ha aislado el gen klhem13 a partir de una genoteca de k. Lactis y se ha llevado a cabo un ensayo de complementaci\u00f3n de un mutante schem13, comprobando que klhem13 codifica una cpo tan similar a la de s.
