Dicho sistema posee comunicaciones intercelulares a trav\u00e9s de gap junctions. Se postula la hip\u00f3tesis que  la comunicaci\u00f3n intercelular a trav\u00e9s  de dichas uniones tiene un papel determinante en la generaci\u00f3n y sincronizaci\u00f3n de patrones oscilatorios en el islote de langerhans.Se realizan estudios electrofisiol\u00f3gicos para registrar la actividad el\u00e9ctrica en dicho sistema y c\u00f3mo \u00e9sta varia al utilizar moduladores de las uniones intercelulares.
