Durante esta pugna, el pensamiento cat\u00f3lico mexicano se opone al regalismo, juzg\u00e1ndolo opresivo para con la iglesia, y reivindica la publicidad de la fe en la naci\u00f3n frente a un liberalismo que se entiende a si mismo como salvador de la naci\u00f3n mediante la secularizaci\u00f3n del estado. Por una parte, los liberales reformistas querr\u00e1n una iglesia estrictamente espiritual, ausente de la vida p\u00fablica de la sociedad, la cual quedar\u00eda reservada \u00fanicamente a los individuos y a las realidades estatales. Por otra parte, los principales cat\u00f3licos de entonces querr\u00e1n una iglesia libre en el ejercicio de su misi\u00f3n evangelizadora en la sociedad y protegida por un estado que reconozca al catolicismo como un bien social. Los temas del fuero eclesi\u00e1stico, de la propiedad de bienes eclesi\u00e1sticos, de las \u00f3rdenes religiosas y de la libertad de cultos ofrecer\u00e1n  el campo para la manifestaci\u00f3n y desenvolvimiento de este conflicto. Las actitudes pol\u00edticas de los cat\u00f3licos mexicanos de estos a\u00f1os obedec\u00edan en buena medida a la b\u00fasqueda continua de una modalidad de inserci\u00f3n de la iglesia en la naci\u00f3n que garantizase a los mexicanos la posibilidad de informar con su fe cat\u00f3lica todas las dimensiones de su vida social en las agitadas condiciones de la
