El estudio de esta relaci\u00f3n se ha visto impedido por la gran dificultad para obtener cultivos puros de bacterias representativas del medio marino, lo que nos permitir\u00eda disponer de informaci\u00f3n sobre sus capacidades metab\u00f3licas. El reciente desarrollo de t\u00e9cnicas de resoluci\u00f3n individual (single-cell) ha permitido el estudio de la actividad de poblaciones bacterianas in situ, permitiendo grandes avances en este campo. Estamos comenzando a conocer cual es el papel de grupos espec\u00edficos de bacterias en el ciclo de carbono, y la relaci\u00f3n entre la estructura de la comunidad bacteriana y la magnitud global de ciclo de carbono en el oc\u00e9ano. En esta tesis, se estudia la relaci\u00f3n entre diversidad bacteriana y funci\u00f3n a lo largo de dos gradientes en aguas marinas: un gradiente temporal (estudio estacional en una estaci\u00f3n costera del mediterr\u00e1neo), y un gradiente espacial que cubre diferentes estados tr\u00f3ficos en aguas oce\u00e1nicas (desde el afloramiento de cabo blanco hasta el giro subtropical del atl\u00e1ntico norte). Primeramente, se ha descrito exhaustivamente la estructura de la comunidad bacteriana en ambos lugares de muestreo, utilizando simult\u00e1neamente diversas t\u00e9cnicas geneticas como bibliotecas g\u00e9nicas, hibridaci\u00f3n in situ con sondas fluorescentes y \u00abfingerprint\u00bb de genes que codifican el rna ribosomico 16s. Tambi\u00e9n se ha estudiado exhaustivamente el uso bacteriano de carbono a lo largo de ambos gradientes, con especial enf\u00e1sis en la identificaci\u00f3n y restricci\u00f3n de las limitaciones en las metodolog\u00edas utilizadas. Tras estos estudios descriptivos, se llevaron a cabo estudios comparativos en los que los cambios en la estructura de la comunidad bacteriana fueron sistem\u00e1ticamente comparados a
