El problema en su conjunto es analizado tanto experimentalmente como con ayuda de modelos num\u00e9ricos y anal\u00edticos. En todo caso la investigaci\u00f3n ha sido realizada dentro del marco te\u00f3rico marcado por teor\u00edas dentro del campo de la mec\u00e1nica de la fractura. Con esta tesis hemos pretendido ayudar a comprender mejor los mecanismos de iniciaci\u00f3n y propagaci\u00f3n de fisuras en elementos de hormig\u00f3n armado y como esta propagaci\u00f3n de las fisuras se relaciona con el fallo del elemento.  la tesis ha sido estructurada en cinco cap\u00edtulos:  en el primer cap\u00edtulo realizamos una breve introducci\u00f3n al tema objeto de estudio, explicando la motivaci\u00f3n del trabajo y sus antecedentes. Posteriormente se presenta un resumen detallado de todo el trabajo, incluyendo las conclusiones m\u00e1s relevantes y el trabajo planteado para el futuro. En los siguientes cap\u00edtulos tanto las campa\u00f1as experimentales como los modelos propuestos son descritos en detalle. Cada uno de estos cap\u00edtulos puede ser considerado como un trabajo independiente, aunque una visi\u00f3n com\u00fan impregna todo el trabajo produciendose una interacci\u00f3n entre los diversos modelos te\u00f3ricos y la experimentaci\u00f3n realizada.   en el segundo cap\u00edtulo son presentados los resultados de una campa\u00f1a experimental, que ten\u00eda el objetivo de estudiar la influencia de la forma de la secci\u00f3n y de la disposici\u00f3n del armado en la fractura de vigas d\u00e9bilmente armadas. Los resultados mostraron una mayor liberaci\u00f3n de energ\u00eda tras alcanzarse la carga de fisuraci\u00f3n en el caso de disponer la armadura en varias capas. La forma de la secci\u00f3n tambi\u00e9n influye en esta carga de fisuraci\u00f3n mostr\u00e1ndose un efecto de la forma de origen similar al denominado efecto de escala. las fisuras en modo mixto o fisuras de cortante son analizadas en el cap\u00edtulo n\u00famero tres.
