Sin embargo, el n\u00famero y la veracidad de las t\u00e9cnicas anal\u00edticas capaces de reconocer varias especies de mercurio sigue siendo muy limitado. Por lo tanto, las t\u00e9cnicas espectrosc\u00f3picas de absorci\u00f3n de rayos-x (xas) basadas en la radiaci\u00f3n sincrotr\u00f3n, han acontecido herramientas interesantes y f\u00e1cilmente disponibles para superar la carencia existente en el campo de la especiaci\u00f3n. Entre otras, las t\u00e9cnicas m\u00e1s comunes son xanes (x-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy) y exafs (extended x-ray absorption fine structure). Otros progresos en este campo se basan en la uni\u00f3n de las t\u00e9cnicas de absorci\u00f3n con una alta resoluci\u00f3n espacial a nivel de microescala, usando las t\u00e9cnicas \u00c2\u00b5-xrf (microscopic x-ray fluorescence) o \u00c2\u00b5-xas.  la comprensi\u00f3n del peligro para el medio ambiente planteado por el metilmercurio (ch3hgcl y ch3hgoh) adsorbido sobre t\u00edpicos componentes del suelo ha sido lograda por la combinaci\u00f3n de las t\u00e9cnicas xas y sensores luminiscentes (escherichia coli mc1061, pmerbrbsluc). La cantidad de hg adsorbido ha resultado ser dependiente del ph, mientras que el car\u00e1cter del enlace independiente del ph. Al comparar la interacci\u00f3n entre el metilmercuri y las arcillas o materiales h\u00famicos, los primeros han dado lugar a un car\u00e1cter i\u00f3nico m\u00e1s alto y por lo tanto a una posibilidad de movilizaci\u00f3n del mercurio m\u00e1s grande. Adem\u00e1s, esta interacci\u00f3n ha resultado ser m\u00e1s estable por el ch3hgoh que por el ch3hgcl, debido a la reactividad extra del grupo hidroxilo.  el distrito de almad\u00e9n en ciudad real ha dado lugar a uno de los ambiente m\u00e1s impactados por el hg en cualquier parte del mundo.
