Estos aditivos proporcionan al material un incremento de la rigidez al mismo tiempo que modifican sustancialmente sus propiedades inel\u00e1sticas, tanto hister\u00e9ticas como dependientes de la velocidad de deformaci\u00f3n. La complicada naturaleza del comportamiento de los elast\u00f3meros reforzados y la extensa variedad de compuestos existentes hace muy dif\u00edcil establecer reglas y herramientas de dise\u00f1o de car\u00e1cter general. No obstante, hoy en d\u00eda para incrementar la competitividad en aplicaciones de alto nivel tecnol\u00f3gico, es necesario disponer de m\u00e9todos de dise\u00f1o suficientemente fiables y r\u00e1pidos, incluyendo aquellos para la caracterizaci\u00f3n de las propiedades del material. el comportamiento mec\u00e1nico de los elast\u00f3meros reforzados es altamente no lineal, dependiente de la velocidad de deformaci\u00f3n y exhibe hist\u00e9resis, deformaciones residuales y ablandamiento por tensi\u00f3n bajo carga c\u00edclica. Cuando una probeta de goma se carga en tracci\u00f3n simple, se descarga y se vuelve  a cargar, la tensi\u00f3n para la segunda carga es menor que la requerida en la primera para deformaciones superiores a la alcanzada en la carga inicial. Este fen\u00f3meno de ablandamiento por tensi\u00f3n se conoce como \u00abefecto mullins\u00bb y se observa durante los primeros ciclos. Otro fen\u00f3meno, conocido como \u00abefecto payne\u00bb o \u00abefecto fletcher-gent\u00bb, involucra el comportamiento tixotr\u00f3pico del material bajo cargas din\u00e1micas y consiste en un decremento substancial del m\u00f3dulo de rigidez cuando se incrementa la amplitud de las deformaciones de las oscilaciones en condiciones de carga din\u00e1mica. durante las \u00faltimas dos d\u00e9cadas, el comportamiento de los elast\u00f3meros se ha simulado mediante m\u00e9todos num\u00e9ricos, especialmente el m\u00e9todo de los elementos finitos.
