Esta prote\u00edna, o para ser m\u00e1s precisos, su carga superficial es esencial para mantener la estructura del os podocitos del epitelio glomerular e impedir la oclusi\u00f3n de las rendijas epiteliales o espacios urinarios. De hecho, esta prote\u00edna sirve como marcador de los podocitos renales. Estos podocitos son c\u00e9lulas epiteliales que forman el soporte delos capilares glomerulares. Se dividen en tres segmentos: el cuerpo celular, las proyecciones principales y las proyecciones del pie. El cuerpo celular y las proyecciones principales yacen en el espacio urinario y est\u00e1n anclados a la membrana basal glomerular por medio de las proyecciones del pie. En los podocitos maduros, la podocalicina es el componente principal de la cara apical de la c\u00e9lula donde se supone que ayuda a mantener el espacio entre las proyecciones interdigitales por repulsi\u00f3n de carga.     recientemente, se ha visto que la podocalicina no es exclusiva del gom\u00e9rulo renal sino que tambi\u00e9n se expresa en c\u00e9lulas mesoteliales que recubren la cavidad cel\u00f3mica, en plaquetas y en c\u00e9lulas precursoras hematopoy\u00e9ticas.     la podocalicina seg\u00fan su localizaci\u00f3n podr\u00eda desempe\u00f1ar funciones contrapuestas, quiz\u00e1s como resultado de acabados postraduccinales espec\u00edficos de cada tejido. En los podocitos del epitelio glomeerular, parece tener propiedades atniadherentes, de las que depende el mantenimiento de la estructura y funci\u00f3n del glom\u00e9rulo renal. Sin embargo, en el endotelio vascular la podocalicina muestra propiedades similares a ligandos de adhesi\u00f3n celular esenciales en el control de la hemostasia, trombosis, inflamaci\u00f3n y aterog\u00e9nesis.     su secuencia de amino\u00e1cidos, estructura proteica y organizaci\u00f3n gen\u00f3mica sugieren que la podocalicina puede estar muy relacionada con otras dos mol\u00e9culas como son la cd34 y el endoglicano.
