Tres de las especies fueron descritas formalmente como especies nuevas, pycnoclavella atl\u00e1ntica, pycnoclavella brava y pycnoclavella communis, y sus holotipos designados. El estudio de gen\u00e9tica de poblaciones llevado a cabo sobre la especie m\u00e1s abundante, pycnoclavella communis, en poblaciones del oeste del mar mediterr\u00e1neo demostr\u00f3 la existencia de dos linajes diferentes correspondientes a dos especies cr\u00edpticas. Estos resultados tambi\u00e9n demostraron que la especie presenta una capacidad de dispersi\u00f3n muy limitada dando lugar a poblaciones estructuradas a nivel local con un flujogen\u00e9tico restringido, incluso, entre poblaciones muy pr\u00f3ximas geogr\u00e1ficamente.     los an\u00e1lisis filogen\u00e9ticos aplicados entre los g\u00e9neros pycnoclavella y clavelina demostraron de modo objetivo que ambos g\u00e9neros deber\u00eda estar incluidos dentro de una sola familia, clavelinidae, en lugar de separados en dos familias clavelinidae y pynoclavellidae, como se hab\u00eda sugerido en los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os.
