Es producida por streptomyces natalensis atcc 27448 y se utiliza rutinariamente en la industria alimentaria para prevenir la contaminaci\u00f3n por mohos en quesos y otros alimentos no est\u00e9riles (carnes curadas, salchichas, fiambres, etc.), Adem\u00e1s se est\u00e1 aplicando con gran \u00e9xito en la prevenci\u00f3n de infecciones f\u00fangicas en oftalmolog\u00eda, especialmente tras operaciones de c\u00f3rnea, y en la prevenci\u00f3n y tratamiento de queratitis del mismo origen. La pimaricina es un macr\u00f3lido tetraeno con un anillo macroc\u00edclico (pimaricinolida) de 26 \u00e1tomos de carbono, incluyendo el cierre por el enlace lactona -co-o-. Se caracteriz\u00f3 la agrupacion g\u00e9nica responsable de la bios\u00edntesis de este polieno (90 kb), donde se han encontrado 13 m\u00f3dulos de poliqu\u00e9tido sintasa distribuidos entre cinco enzimas gigantes (pims0 a pims4). Trece genes adicionales parecen gobernar las modificaciones del esqueleto poliqu\u00e9tido formado por las cinco enzimas citadas, su secreci\u00f3n y su regulaci\u00f3n. Este trabajo se centr\u00f3 en la b\u00fasqueda, clonaci\u00f3n, secuenciaci\u00f3n y caracterizaci\u00f3n de posibles genes reguladores de la bios\u00edntesis de pimaricina. La secuenciaci\u00f3n del extremo izquierdo de la agrupaci\u00f3n g\u00e9nica responsable de la s\u00edntesis de la pimaricina revel\u00f3 la presencia de un gen pimr, un gen de 3597 pb que codifica una prote\u00edna reguladora pimr de 1198 aa. Pimr, representa el arquetipo de una nueva clase de reguladores, que combinan un dominio regulador de la bios\u00edntesis de antibi\u00f3ticos de streptomyces (sarp) en la secci\u00f3n n-terminal, con una secci\u00f3n c-terminal hom\u00f3loga a guanilato ciclasas (cyc) y a reguladores de gran tama\u00f1o dependientes de atp de la familia luxr (lal). La inactivaci\u00f3n de esta prote\u00edna hace que la cepa no produzca pimaricina, lo que hace a pimr un regulador positivo de la s\u00edntesis de pimaricina.
