Concretamente, tres especies bacterianas han sido empleadas como modelos para estudar las diferentes etapas del proceso de evoluci\u00f3n reductiva: la bacteria endosimbionte de pulgones, buchnera aphidicola, la bacteria endosimbionte de hormigas, blochmannia floridanus, y un pat\u00f3geno de humanos, mycobacterium leprae. Las primeras dos especies se encuentran en un avanzado estado de desintegraci\u00f3n gen\u00f3mica de modo que han sido empleadas como modelos para estudiar las fases finales del proceso de reducci\u00f3n genica. Por el contrario mycobacterium leprae se halla en estadios iniciales del proceso por lo que se ha utilizado para caracterizar las etapas tempranas de la evoluci\u00f3n reductiva del genoma.
