Las lectinas son ubicuas en organismos de toda la escala evolutiva, estando  implicadas en multitud de procesos biol\u00f3gicos, tanto fisiol\u00f3gicos como patol\u00f3gicos. La disposici\u00f3n espacial de los lugares de uni\u00f3n de az\u00facares es un elemento clave para el reconocimiento de glicanos en la superficie celular el objetivo global de la tesis fue profundizar en aspectos estructurales y evolutivos de lectinas vegetales. Por una parte, se han caracterizado las lectinas hca y hml de las algas rojas marinas hypnea cervicomis  e hypnea musciformis, respectivamente. Estas lectinas contienen 90 amino\u00e1cidos y sus secuencias son muy similares. Las estructutras primarias  de hca y hml constan de dos dominios hom\u00f3logos entre s\u00ed, dispuestos en tandem y no muestran similitud de secuencia con ninguna prote\u00edna descrita.  Proponemos que hca y hml son miembros fundadores de una nueva familia de prote\u00ednas. Por otra parte, la tesis se centro en la determinaci\u00f3n de  las bases estructurales del equilibrio dimero-tetramero dependiente del ph que presentan algunas lectinas de la tribu diocleinae de la familia  papilionoideae de las leguminosas. Para ello, se ha empleado un abordaje basado en t\u00e9cnicas de biolog\u00eda molecular (expresi\u00f3n recombinante de lectinas  nativas y mutantes), biof\u00edsica (equilibrio de sedmentaci\u00f3n) y biolog\u00eda estructural (determinaci\u00f3n de las estructuras cristalinas de las lectinas  recombinates). Debido al complejo sistema de procesamiento post-traduccional asociado a la bios\u00edntesis de las lectinas de leguminosas, la expresi\u00f3n  recombinante de las lectinas en escherichia coli requiri\u00f3 el dise\u00f1o de un gen sint\u00e9tico que codificara a la prote\u00edna madura (cadena alfa). Las lectinas  de dioclea guianensis (r-adguia) y dioclea grandiflora (r-adgl) producidas de forma recombinante en e.
