Se ha determinado que se expresa en tejidos que presentan una elevada capacidad oxidativa en los que juega un papel determinante en el mantenimiento de la homeostasis metab\u00f3lica. Su funci\u00f3n principal radica en regular la biog\u00e9nesis mitocondrial y el metabolismo oxidativo aunque posee otras funciones tejido espec\u00edficas. Pgc-1alfa lleva a cabo todas estas funciones a trav\u00e9s de la coactivaci\u00f3n de un gran n\u00famero de factores de transcripci\u00f3n entre los que se incluyen los ppars. Estos receptores nucleares se consideran factores claves que traducen los est\u00edmulos nutricionales, farmacol\u00f3gicos y metab\u00f3licos, en cambios de la expresi\u00f3n de genes que regulan el metabolismo lip\u00eddico.  el principal aporte de este trabajo es la identificaci\u00f3n de pgc-1alfa como gen diana de ligandos de ppars a trav\u00e9s de un ppre que se encuentra en la zona distal del promotor y la existencia de un mecanismo de autorregulaci\u00f3n positiva de pgc-1alfa a trav\u00e9s de la coactivaci\u00f3n de la acci\u00f3n de los ppars sobre su propio promotor. Este mecanismo garantiza que ante determinados est\u00edmulos activadores de ppars se mantengan elevados los niveles de expresi\u00f3n de este coactivador, necesario para llevar a cabo una respuesta g\u00e9nica espec\u00edfica. Adem\u00e1s se determin\u00f3 que los ppars activan la transcripci\u00f3n de este gen de forma subtipo-espec\u00edfica y diferencial seg\u00fan el tejido. Este estudio se centr\u00f3 en la regulaci\u00f3n de pcg-1alfa en los tejidos adiposos y en el m\u00fasculo esquel\u00e9tico, tejidos implicados en el metabolismo energ\u00e9tico. As\u00ed, en el tejido adiposo marr\u00f3n los tres subptipos de ppars inducen la transcripci\u00f3n del gen pgc-1alfa.
