Hist\u00f3ricamente, el arte y la literatura occidentales han presentado la vejez como una etapa de p\u00e9rdida y dependencia. En la actualidad, una creciente cultura de consumo ha contribuido a bombardearnos con mensajes de juventud eterna con una amplia oferta de productos y t\u00e9cnicas. As\u00ed pues, el cuerpo que se mantiene joven se considera virtuoso mientras que el cuerpo envejecido se ha reafirmado como sin\u00f3nimo de esterilidad, enfermedad y dependencia. tomando el interaccionismo simb\u00f3lico como marco te\u00f3rico y veintis\u00e9is novelas de catorce autores ingleses contempor\u00e1neos conocidos por su trayectoria literaria, esta tesis pretende demostrar que las connotaciones negativas que envuelven el cuerpo envejecido se basan en creencias culturales &#8211; sin eximir el elemento biol\u00f3gico. El interaccionismo simb\u00f3lico, establecido por george mead y desenvolupado por herbert blumer, considera que la constante interacci\u00f3n entre las personas y los objetos que las rodean &#8211; otros seres, conceptos, materiales f\u00edsicos &#8211; contribuyen a la negociaci\u00f3n y creaci\u00f3n de cada uno de los significados que forman parte de nuestras vidas. La constante interacci\u00f3n entre la persona madura y la sociedad contribuye a que esta perciba que su cuerpo est\u00e1 cambiando y, en consecuencia, redefina las bases de su personalidad. no obstante, mike hepworth y mike feathearstone, entre otros estudiosos, han detectado una contradicci\u00f3n b\u00e1sica. Pese a que los cuerpos envejecen y la sociedad responde negativamente a estos cambios f\u00edsicos, la persona mayor continua sinti\u00e9ndose joven y activa. Hepworth y featherstone han dado a tal contradicci\u00f3n el nombre de the mask of ageing.
