La neurog\u00e9nesis postnatal se ha demostrado concluyentemente en tan s\u00f3lo dos zonas del cerebro adulto de los mam\u00edferos, la llamada zona subventricular (svz) o zona subependimaria, constituida por las capas celulares adyacentes al ap\u00e9ndimo que recubre los ventr\u00edculos laterales en el lado del n\u00facleo estriado (\u00e1lvarez-buyita y garc\u00eda-verdugo, 2002) y que da lugar a neuronas que se incorporan al bulbo olfatorio (ob) y la zona subgranular (sgz) en el giro dentado del hipocampo, que da lugar a neuronas que se incorporan a la propia estructura (kempermann y gage, 2000). La generaci\u00f3n de nuevas neuronas hasta la edad adulta se ha demostrado incluso en el hipocampo humano (eriksson y cols., 1998). Las c\u00e9lulas madre adultas son c\u00e9lulas relativamente quiescentes, o de proliferaci\u00f3n muy lenta, pero con capacidad de responder a se\u00f1ales espec\u00edficas del medio y reanudar la actividad proliferativa para reemplazar r\u00e1pidamente c\u00e9lulas muertas o da\u00f1adas. En la svz se han identificado, gracias a reconstrucciones mediante microscopia electr\u00f3nica, cuatro tipos celulares con caracter\u00edsticas ultraestructurales diferenciales, astrocitos (c\u00e9lulas tipo b), progenitores (c\u00e9lulas tipo c), neuroblastos migradores (c\u00e9lulas tipo a) y c\u00e9lulas ex\u00c2\u00a1pendimarias (doetsch y col., 1997); garc\u00eda-verdugo y col., 1998; doetsch y cols., 1999a, johansson y cols., 1999; peretto y cols., 1999). Las c\u00e9lulas tipo b tienen caracter\u00edsticas ultraestructurales similares a las de los astrocitos del cerebro y pueden ser distinguidas por la expresi\u00f3n de vimentina y de la
