La gran ventaja de los modos caracter\u00edsticos, frente a otros m\u00e9todos de dise\u00f1o, es la clara visi\u00f3n f\u00edsica que proporcionan de los fen\u00f3menos que contribuyen a la radiaci\u00f3n de la antena.   a trav\u00e9s de numerosos ejemplos se demostrar\u00e1 como los modos caracter\u00edsticos permiten comprender mejor el funcionamiento de una antena, de forma que el dise\u00f1o de la misma se puede realizar de forma justificada y coherente. Tambi\u00e9n se mostrar\u00e1 como la informaci\u00f3n proporcionada por los modos caracter\u00edsticos puede ser aprovechada para seleccionar la forma m\u00e1s apropiada para el elemento radiante, al igual que para elegir una configuraci\u00f3n de alimentaci\u00f3n \u00f3ptima que maximice el ancho de banda de impedancia.  la teor\u00eda de los modos caracter\u00edsticos fue inicialmente formulada por garbacz en 1968, y posteriormente refinada por harrington y mautz en 1971. Tradicionalmente, los modos caracter\u00edsticos han sido empleados para sintetizar formas de antena, y para controlar la difracci\u00f3n de objetos mediante carga reactiva. Sin embargo, en la actualidad, la teor\u00eda de los modos caracter\u00edsticos ha ca\u00eddo pr\u00e1cticamente en el olvido, a pesar de que permite obtener una soluci\u00f3n modal para la corriente, que es de gran utilidad a la hora de analizar problemas de an\u00e1lisis, s\u00edntesis y optimizaci\u00f3n de antenas y difractores.  la teor\u00eda de los modos caracter\u00edsticos parte de la definici\u00f3n de un problema de autovalores que involucra la matriz de impedancia generalizada de la estructura, y que tras ser resuelto proporciona un conjunto de modos de corriente reales, que son los denominados modos caracter\u00edsticos. Estos modos se corresponden con las resonancias naturales de la estructura y pueden ser obtenidos num\u00e9ricamente para cuerpos conductores de forma arbitraria.  por otra parte, los modos
