Las vicilinas son una de las principales proteinas de reserva de las leguminosas y estan codificadas por familias genicas. Los distintos genes aislados en lenteja pertenecen a dos subfamilias genicas que codifican para dos tipos de subunidades diferentes.  los genes de vicilinas de lenteja muestran estructuras semejantes a las que presentan estos genes en otras especies, incluyendo las secuencias promotoras.
