Sin embargo, tambi\u00e9n presentan algunas limitaciones. Una de ellas es su inherente combustibilidad por lo que, en presencia de una fuente de calor y ox\u00edgeno se queman f\u00e1cil y r\u00e1pidamente. El problema que se plantea no es \u00fanicamente la p\u00e9rdida de propiedades de material, sino que el humo y los gases t\u00f3xicos que se desprenden son los principales responsables del peligro que supone un incendio. Otra de las limitaciones es que, durante el curado, experimentan una contracci\u00f3n que lleva a tensiones lo que con el tiempo produce fatiga mec\u00e1nica y la posible aparici\u00f3n de grietas y roturas, adem\u00e1s de producir una p\u00e9rdida de adhesi\u00f3n a otros componentes. entre las diferentes estrategias para conseguir materiales resistentes a la llama se encuentran la incorporaci\u00f3n de cargas (aditivos) o la modificaci\u00f3n de la estructura qu\u00edmica y la s\u00edntesis de pol\u00edmeros espec\u00edficos (reactivos). Aunque el uso de aditivos es el m\u00e9todo m\u00e1s extendido a nivel industrial por razones econ\u00f3micas, presenta algunos inconvenientes, as\u00ed se pueden extraer con disolventes, pueden migrar y pueden deteriorar las propiedades del material. La modificaci\u00f3n qu\u00edmica del material para conferirle propiedades ign\u00edfugas, ya sea mediante la polimerizaci\u00f3n de mon\u00f3meros que contengan el \u00e1tomo responsable de la resistencia al fuego o la modificaci\u00f3n posterior del pol\u00edmero, permite solventar los problemas antes mencionados de los aditivos. aunque existen diferentes heteroelementos que se pueden utilizar como retardantes a la llama, el mercado est\u00e1 aun dominado por el uso de compuestos halogenados. Estos compuestos que son altamente efectivos, interfiriendo en las reacciones responsables de la propagaci\u00f3n de la llama presentan como inconveniente que durante la combusti\u00f3n se desprenden
