La paja de cebada, importante residuo de la industria del grano en nuestro pais, constituye una materia prima prometedora para la obtenci\u00f3n de etanol mediante un proceso de sacarificaci\u00f3n enzim\u00e1tica y una fermentaci\u00f3n microbiana posterior. El progreso de este proceso depende en gran parte del desarrollo de un pretratamiento inocuo para el medio ambiente, sistemas enzim\u00e1ticos eficaces para la conversi\u00f3n de la cebada pretratada a az\u00facares fermentables, y una conversi\u00f3n eficiente de az\u00facares fermentables a etanol. el pretratamiento seleccionado, explosi\u00f3n por vapor (ev) a 210\u00c2\u00ba durante 3 minutos, se mostr\u00f3 eficaz tanto en la recuperaci\u00f3n de az\u00facares como en el aumento de la digestibilidad enzim\u00e1tica de la celulosa de paja de cebada. Al incluir los compuestos solubilizados (prehidrolizado) durante la ev en el medio de hidr\u00f3lisis, se observ\u00f3 una reducci\u00f3n en la conversi\u00f3n de celulosa (cc). La fracci\u00f3n de az\u00facares presente en el prehidrolizado ejerci\u00f3 un mayor efecto inhibidor sobre la hidr\u00f3lisis enzim\u00e1tica (he) que los productos de degradaci\u00f3n igualmente contenidos en el mismo. El empleo de enzimas accesorias como endo-xilanasas logr\u00f3 incrementar tanto la cc de la paja pretratada en un proceso de he, como el rendimiento en etanol en un proceso de kluyveromyces marxianus
