Debido a la amenaza ambiental que supone su naturaleza refractaria, surge la necesidad del tratamiento antes de la descarga. Los procesos biol\u00f3gicos, f\u00edsicos y qu\u00edmicos convencionales resultan ineficaces en la decoloraci\u00f3n y mineralizaci\u00f3n completa de estos efluentes. Como alternativa emergen los procesos avanzados de oxidaci\u00f3n (paos), basados principalmente en la generaci\u00f3n de radicales hidroxilo (ho\u00c2\u00b7) altamente reactivos. \u00e9stos pueden aplicarse de forma exclusiva o combinados con tratamientos biol\u00f3gicos con el fin de reducir su elevado consumo de reactivos y energ\u00eda. Entre los diferentes paos disponibles, los procesos de fenton y, particularmente, los procesos de foto-fenton (basados en la generaci\u00f3n de ho\u00c2\u00b7 mediante la adici\u00f3n de per\u00f3xido de hidr\u00f3geno y una sal ferrosa en disoluci\u00f3n acuosa) suponen la mejor opci\u00f3n debido a su elevada eficacia y bajo coste econ\u00f3mico. Adicionalmente, los procesos de foto-fenton pueden llevarse a cabo bajo radiaci\u00f3n solar, ofreciendo nuevas ventajas econ\u00f3micas y medioambientales.  esta tesis doctoral se centra b\u00e1sicamente en la aplicaci\u00f3n del proceso de foto-fenton como etapa previa en la degradaci\u00f3n de soluciones de azo colorantes reactivos biorrecalcitrantes, con el prop\u00f3sito de generar un nuevo efluente compatible con un tratamiento biol\u00f3gico aerobio posterior de menor coste e impacto ambiental que los primeros.
