El ancho de la banda espectral y el an\u00e1lisis temporal hacen que el rxte sea un instrumento adecuado para el estudio de sistemas binarios con acreci\u00f3n de materia. Aunque uno objeto comparable a una ciudad peque\u00f1a (radio 10km), cuya masa es superior a 1,4 msol, es complicado de imaginar, la proliferaci\u00f3n de observatorios espaciales (desde la d\u00e9cada de los 70 hasta la actualidad) ha permitido ampliar su estudio y descubrir nuevas propiedades. Si una estrella de neutrones forma parte de un sistema binario junto a un estrella \u00f3ptica (tambi\u00e9n denominada compa\u00f1era), se puede producir el fen\u00f3meno de acreci\u00f3n de materia desde \u00e9sta hacia el objeto compacto. El intenso campo gravitacional de la estrella de neutrones permite incrementar la velocidad de la materia durante el proceso de acreci\u00f3n. La energ\u00eda cin\u00e9tica disipada pro el frenado del material en la superficie (o pr\u00f3xima a ella) de la estrella de neutrones provoca la producci\u00f3n de los rayos x.  estos sistemas reciben el nombre de binarias de rayos x de alta masa. Por lo tanto, la descripci\u00f3n de este tipo de sistemas y las diferentes categor\u00edas se discuten en el cap\u00edtulo 2. Los pulsares son estrellas de neutrones que giran sobre s\u00ed mismas y emiten destellos regulares.
