Comparten homolog\u00edas funcionales y estructurales, y median interacciones de adhesi\u00f3n c\u00e9lula-c\u00e9lula fundamentales para el sistema inmune. Las interacciones de adhesi\u00f3n entre miembros de la subfamilia icam y las integrinas leucocitarias lfa-1 y mac-1 median el tr\u00e1fico de leucocitos a trav\u00e9s de tejidos inflamados y no inflamados y contribuyen a la activaci\u00f3n dependiente de ant\u00edgeno de las c\u00e9lulas t.  las estructuras cristalogr\u00e1ficas de los dos dominios n-terminales de icam-1 e icam-2 glicosilados proporcionaron un marco de estudio para entender las funciones de las glicosilaciones en la estructura y funci\u00f3n de los icams. Se observ\u00f3 que los az\u00facares m\u00e1s conservados eran menos flexibles en las estructuras, que interaccionaban con residuos proteicos y contribu\u00edan al plegamiento y expresi\u00f3n del receptor. El primer n-glicano de icam-2 contacta con un residuo trp expuesto y define un motivo muy conservado, cr\u00edtico para la conformaci\u00f3n del dominio de uni\u00f3n a integrina n-terminal. el primer dominio de icam-1 es reconocido por la integrina lfa-1 y por otros ligandos no integrina, como el rinovirus humano y prote\u00ednas derivadas de plasmodium falciparum. Se ha observado que mol\u00e9culas solubles de icam-1 con los dos dominios n-terminales son funcionales en la uni\u00f3n a ligandos, sin embargo no hab\u00eda sido posible la expresi\u00f3n de un solo dominio n-terminal. Nosotros fuimos capaces de expresar un solo dominio n-terminal de icam-1 mediante la introducci\u00f3n de n-glicosilaciones en diferentes partes de la mol\u00e9cula, y comprobamos que la expresi\u00f3n era dependiente de la localizaci\u00f3n de los az\u00facares.  mediante experimentos con mol\u00e9culas solubles que conten\u00edan los dos dominios n-terminal de diferentes icams
