Sin embargo, \u00faltimamente varios autores han insistido en la necesidad de tener en cuenta aspectos funcionales para evaluar el estado de los r\u00edos, ya que tanto la estructura como el funcionamiento son aspectos esenciales de los ecosistemas. En esta tesis se ha trabajado en torno a dos procesos funcionales en los r\u00edos, el metabolismo y la retenci\u00f3n de nutrientes, se ha estudiado tambi\u00e9n la din\u00e1mica del perifiton, directamente relacionado con los procesos antes mencionados.     la din\u00e1mica perifitica se ha estudiado durante un a\u00f1o en 5 estaciones del r\u00edo ag\u00ed\u00bcera que difieren sobre todo en lo que se refiere al contenido de nutrientes y cobertura de bosque de ribera, y se han comparado con estudios anteriores de las mismas estaciones para obtener una visi\u00f3n interanual. Se ha visto que la variaci\u00f3n espacial la controlan la disponibilidad de luz y nutrientes, mientas que la temporal tanto anual como interanual esta definida por la hidrolog\u00eda en las estaciones abiertas y en las cubiertas la disponibilidad de luz es m\u00e1s. En torno al perifiton tambi\u00e9n se ha estudiado el efecto de la sedimentaci\u00f3n mediante un experimento en canales artificiales.
