Este t\u00e9rmino hace referencia a una unidad funcional integrada por diferentes rutas metab\u00f3licas que catalizan la transformaci\u00f3n de \u00e1cido fenilac\u00e9tico y de diferentes compuestos relacionados estructuralmente con \u00e9l, hasta fenilacetil-coa, as\u00ed como, una ruta central que cataliza la transformaci\u00f3n de este tio\u00e9ster en succinil-coa. En p. Putida u la degradaci\u00f3n de 2-feniletilamina y de 2-feniletanol requiere la participaci\u00f3n de 37 genes organizados en cuatro rutas diferentes: dos rutas catab\u00f3licas (pea, ruta degradativa de 2-feniletilamina y ped, ruta responsable de la asimilaci\u00f3n de 2-feniletanol) y dos rutas anab\u00f3licas (pqq, implicada en la bios\u00edntesis del cofactor pqq; y ccm, responsable de la biog\u00e9nesis del citocromo c), que en conjunto podr\u00edan considerarse como una unidad catab\u00f3lica particular que cataliza la oxidaci\u00f3n de estos compuestos hasta \u00e1cido fenilac\u00e9tico. Se han identificado y caracterizado 9 genes que se localizan muy pr\u00f3ximos en un fragmento de 16,6 kb y que constituyen el cluster pea responsable de la degradaci\u00f3n de 2-feniletilamina. Entre las prote\u00ednas pea codificadas en esta agrupaci\u00f3n g\u00e9nica se incluyen: (i) un sistema de transporte (peahr); (ii) una quinohemoprote\u00edna amino deshidrogenasa periplasm\u00e1tica (peaabcd); (iii) una aldeh\u00eddo deshidrogenasa dependiente de nad+ (peae); y (iv) dos prote\u00ednas adicionales (peafg), que hasta ahora no se hab\u00edan relacionado nunca con el catabolismo de aminas primarias, y que pueden constituir junto con peae un complejo enzim\u00e1tico implicado en la oxidaci\u00f3n del aldeh\u00eddo generado por la qh-amdh.
