Antiguamente las cantidades de estas substancias indeseadas pod\u00edan ser reducidas con tecnolog\u00edas internas en el cilindro del motor. Sin embargo, los l\u00edmites de las \u00faltimas legislaciones de contaminantes solo pueden ser conseguidos por una combinaci\u00f3n de t\u00e9cnicas cl\u00e1sicas (in cylinder) y postratamiento de los gases de escape.  Por lo tanto, esta tesis doctoral presenta un concepto de combusti\u00f3n novedosa confiando en la tecnolog\u00eda de postratamiento de algunos de dichos contaminantes (part\u00edculas de holl\u00edn, hidrocarburos no quemados y mon\u00f3xido de carbono) y utiliza una novedosa estrategia de combusti\u00f3n para mejorar otras caracter\u00edsticas no deseadas (\u00f3xidos de nitr\u00f3geno y ruido de combusti\u00f3n). esta tesis est\u00e1 basada en el an\u00e1lisis de los resultados obtenidos directamente de un motor diesel monocil\u00edndrico de inyecci\u00f3n directa.  Este motor esta derivado de un motor prototipo de cuatro cilindros.  La investigaci\u00f3n experimental se enfoca en la exploraci\u00f3n de modos novedosos de operaci\u00f3n, caracterizados por niveles de \u00f3xidos de nitr\u00f3geno muy reducidos y bajo nivel de ruido.  Estos resultados son alcanzados por medio de una cuidadosa optimizaci\u00f3n hacia objetivos representativos de un motor con postratamiento de part\u00edculas de holl\u00edn, de hidrocarburos no quemados y de mon\u00f3xido de carbono (evitando postratamiento de \u00f3xidos de nitr\u00f3geno).  Esta combusti\u00f3n optimizada esta fundada en dos inyecciones separadas y retardadas en combinaci\u00f3n con una alta tasa de recirculaci\u00f3n de gases de escape, lo que resulta en una combusti\u00f3n altamente premezclada.  Dicha combusti\u00f3n premezclada evita las zonas de alta temperatura que son t\u00edpicas en los motores diesel, por lo tanto esta combusti\u00f3n puede ser renombrada como combusti\u00f3n a baja temperatura (low-temperature combustion).
