Adem\u00e1s de las p\u00e9rdidas econ\u00f3micas que comporta, relacionadas con la ganader\u00eda, la fasciolosis est\u00e1 empezando a ser una enfermedad cr\u00f3nica relevante en el hombre estim\u00e1ndose en mas de 180 millones las personas expuestas a ser infectadas por este par\u00e1sito. en la actualidad no existen vacunas eficaces frente a f. Hepatica y, aunque se dispone de fasciolicidas efectivos como el tricabendazol, su alto coste, las frecuentes reinfecciones  y la aparici\u00f3n de resistencias sugieren la b\u00fasqueda de otros m\u00e9todos alternativos de tratamiento. la producci\u00f3n de especies reactivas del ox\u00edgeno y del nitr\u00f3geno son mecanismos efectores importantes del sistema inmune. Aunque f. Hepatica no es un par\u00e1sito fagocitable s\u00ed est\u00e1 sometido al estr\u00e9s oxidativo ex\u00f3geno impuesto por las c\u00e9lulas efectoras del sistema inmune del hospedador debiendo, para su supervivencia, protegerse de este da\u00f1o utilizando mecanismos antioxidantes. Los componentes de este tipo de sistemas se han postulado como blancos terap\u00e9uticos importantes para el control de las enfermedades parasitarias. Uno de los mecanismos antioxidantes descritos en helmintos es el sistema tiorredoxina (tiorredoxina reductasa, tr; tiorredoxina, trx; tiorredoxina peroxidasa, tpx) considerado como una \u00abdisulfuro reductasa general\u00bb que interviene en la reducci\u00f3n de enlaces disulfuro expuestos de una variedad de prote\u00ednas y es capaz de metabolizar el h2o2 y otros alquilhidro- per\u00f3xidos. en nuestro laboratorio se hab\u00edan caracterizado con anterioridad dos componentes de este sistema, la tiorredoxina peroxidasa y la tiorredoxina como elementos posiblemente implicados en la defensa del par\u00e1sito frente al estr\u00e9s oxidativo.
