Niveles altos de homociste\u00edna en sangre (hiperhomocisteinemia, hhcy) se han vinculado con diversas enfermedades, entre las cuales destaca la enfermedad de alzheimer (ea), mediante efectos sobre la muerte apopt\u00f3tica, el estr\u00e9s oxidativo (eo), el estr\u00e9s de ret\u00edculo endopl\u00e1smico, excitotoxicidad y alteraci\u00f3n del sistema inmune. Por lo tanto, nos propusimos estudiar los efectos de la homociste\u00edna en un modelo neuronal humano en ausencia y en presencia de eo, como se produce en el envejecimiento.  los resultados obtenidos del modelo \u00abin vitro\u00bb  nos revelaron que la hcy hasta concentraciones de hhcy moderada (100\u00c2\u00b5m de hcy) es un elemento protector, incrementando la viabilidad celular y disminuyendo la muerte por apoptosis, sobre todo en presencia de eo, siempre que el aporte de folato fuese el adecuado. Sin embargo, en ausencia de folato, la hhcy moderada se convirti\u00f3 en un agente neurot\u00f3xico, incentivando la toxicidad del eo: tanto disminuyendo la viabilidad celular como incrementando la muerte apopt\u00f3tica celular. a continuaci\u00f3n, realizamos un estudio de expresi\u00f3n diferencial del modelo \u00abin vitro\u00bb de la hhcy moderada en presencia y en ausencia de eo. De la cual se desprendi\u00f3 que la hcy por s\u00ed misma ten\u00eda capacidad de regular las v\u00edas implicadas en la defensa e inmunidad y favorec\u00eda la supervivencia neuronal, activando la neurog\u00e9nesis. Por otro parte, la hhcy moderada en presencia de eo tambi\u00e9n regulaba las rutas de defensa, y adem\u00e1s activaba las rutas de transporte necesarias para incrementar el aporte energ\u00e9tico en la c\u00e9lula y reprim\u00eda las v\u00edas implicadas en excitotoxicidad, reforzando su papel neuroprotector. por \u00faltimo, realizamos un estudio de asociaci\u00f3n de los genes encargados de regular el nivel de hcy en sangre: los genes clave del ciclo del folato mthfr y mtrr.
