Estas alteraciones de la biosintesis del hemo son, al igual que la anemia, parcialmente observables en los nefropatas cronicos aun no sometidos a programa de dialisis, y son mas acentuadas o pronunciadas en los enfermos tratados con hemodialisis que en los sometidos a dialisis peritoneal continua ambulatoria.  estos trastornos son reproducibles en modelos experimentales de insuficiencia renal cronica inducida mediante nefrectomia, funcional provocada por ciclosporina y aguda producida mediante ligadura de ureteres.  la hipoactividad del ala-d, al no ser una enzima limitante de la porfirinosintesis, no debe ser considerada como factor coadyuvante de la anemia. No obstante, la administracion de eritropoyetina recombinante humana (r-huepo) corrige la anemia a la par que restaura transitoriamente la hipoactividad globular del ala-d.  la acumulacion de porfirinas en el plasma de los enfermos renales cronicos es, al menos en parte, debida a su insuficiente depuracion por los procedimientos dialiticos estudiados que no consiguen eliminar tales porfirinas con la misma eficacia que el ri\u00f1on sano.  la desferroxamina y la r-huepo constituyen tratamientos efectivos de la porfiria cutanea tarda con irc asociada.  ademas, el uso de membranas
