En el caso de las galaxias de tipo temprano (early-type galaxies o etg), los modelos actuales de formaci\u00f3n jer\u00e1rquica (white &#038; rees 1978; kauffmann &#038; white 1993; baugh et al. 1996) predicen que las mezclas (mergers) de galaxias son los procesos m\u00e1s comunes mediante las cuales se forman las galaxias m\u00e1s grandes y luminosas. Por otro lado, las galaxias en general, difieren ampliamente en sus propiedades observables (luminosidad, color, masa, tama\u00f1o, brillo superficial, etc.) Y sin embargo muestran relaciones muy precisas entre dichos par\u00e1metros. Entre las correlaciones m\u00e1s importantes de los par\u00e1metros observables de las etg est\u00e1n: la relaci\u00f3n faber-jackson (correlaci\u00f3n entre la magnitud absoluta y la dispersi\u00f3n de velocidades central) (faber &#038; jackson 1976); la relaci\u00f3n de kormendy (correlaci\u00f3n entre el brillo superficial efectivo medio y el radio efectivo) (kormendy 1997) y, la m\u00e1s importante de todas puesto que contendr\u00eda a las dos anteriores, el plano fundamental (correlaci\u00f3n entre la dispersi\u00f3n de velocidades central, el brillo superficial efectivo medio y el radio efectivo) (dressler et al. 1987 et al. 1987; djorgovski et al. 1987). La homogeneidad de las etg es dif\u00edcil de entender de acuerdo a los modelos de formaci\u00f3n gal\u00e1ctica mencionados, sobre todo, debido a que dichos modelos predicen que las galaxias peque\u00f1as, que presumiblemente difieren en edad, historia de formaci\u00f3n estelar y contenido de gas, forman a las galaxias m\u00e1s grandes. Una posible explicaci\u00f3n a la homogeneidad encontrada apunta a una formaci\u00f3n temprana de las etg (worthey 1994), de hecho, algunos autores argumentan que las etg est\u00e1n formadas por poblaciones estelares viejas (bernardi et al. 1988). Pero la homogeneidad no es un problema resuelto, por el contrario, existen muchas interrogantes por despejar.
