Con la intenci\u00f3n de estudiar el posible papel fisiol\u00f3gico de la abundancia de ssao en el tejido adiposo, el grupo en el que se ha desarrollado esta tesis, trabaja, desde hace a\u00f1os, en el estudio de los efectos insulinomim\u00e9ticos de la administraci\u00f3n conjunta de vanadato y benzilamina (sustrato de ssao no fisiol\u00f3gico). En adipositos aislados, la benzilamina, en combinaci\u00f3n con dosis bajas e inafectivas de vanadato es capaz de estimular el transporte de glucosa, de maneta muy significativa, in vivo, es capaz de disminuir los niveles de glicemia en modelos animales de diabetes de tipo 1 y 2.   la prote\u00edna vap-1 que es id\u00e9ntica a ssao, en las c\u00e9lulas endoteliales presenta una funci\u00f3n de adhesi\u00f3n de linfocitos. As\u00ed pues, ssao\/vap-1 es una prote\u00edna con doble funci\u00f3n, por un lado, presenta actividad enzim\u00e1tica amino oxidasa y, por otra parte, presenta propiedades de adhesi\u00f3n que la implican en la extravasaci\u00f3n de linfocitos en procesos inflamatorios, se han utilizado inhibidores de ssao como antiinflamatorios en varios modelos animales.  adem\u00e1s de la forma de membrana de ssao\/vap-1 existe una forma soluble de ssao en el plasma, el origen de la cual, era desconocido al inicio de esta tesis, pero era conocido que sus niveles estaban aumentados en pacientes de diabetes de tipo 1 y 2.
