Nos propusimos establecer si los esteroides neuroactivos ejercen un efecto modulatorio sobre la reactividad astrocitaria a la lesion.  el modelo de lesion utilizado produjo un aislamiento permanente de la herida mediante hipertrofia e hiperplasia astrocitaria desde los primeros tres dias, mientras que la permeabilidad selectiva vascular se restablecio a partir de la primera semana post-lesion. La inmunoreactividad a igf-i, bfgf y gfap se incremento en la poblacion astrocitaria, asi como la concentracion tisular de igfi y gfap en la corteza cerebral e hipocampo lesionados. La lesion provoco una gran elevacion transitoria de la concentracion tisular de igf-i que persistio durante tres dias, sin embargo tanto el igf-i y el bfgf solamente se identificaron en una sub-poblacion de astrocitos reactivos cercanos a la lesion.  los esteroides gonadales inhibieron la proliferacion de astrocitos a la lesion, ya que en todos los experimentos in vivo, tanto en machos como en hembras la castracion indujo una mayor proliferacion astrocitaria que revirtio por la reposicion, mediante inyeccion subcutanea, de los esteroides gonadales (testosterona a los machos y progesterona o 17 beta- estradiol a las hembras).  igualmente, en el hipocampo de animales castrados lesionados se produjo una elevacion de los niveles de gfap, mientras que la concentracion regional de gfap no se modifico por efecto de la castracion en animales no lesionados. La castracion no modifico la concentracion de igf-i en los tejidos de animales intactos y lesionados.  el suministro intracerebro-ventricular de esteroides gonadales y neuroesteroides produjo
