Para ello se utilizan t\u00e9cnicas inmunohistoqu\u00edmicas de microscopia \u00f3ptica y electr\u00f3nica. Los resultados muestran que en la sustancia blanca normal, los eaats presentan una distribuci\u00f3n diferencial que indica que cada eaat participa de forma diferente en el mantenimiento de la homeostasis glutamat\u00e9rgica, lo que puede ser relevante en procesos de excitotoxicidad. P2x7 tambi\u00e9n se expresa en la sustancia blanca normal, sobre todo en oligodendrocitos a nivel de las vainas de mielina, lo que sugiere que estas c\u00e9lulas son vulnerables a la excitotoxicidad purin\u00e9rgica. En tractos de sustancia blanca de ratones afectados por eae se produce un aumento de eaat1-2 y una disminuci\u00f3n de eaat3 respecto a los controles. Este aumento de eaat1-2 indica su participaci\u00f3n en las alteraciones excitot\u00f3xicas asociadas a esta enfermedad. Asimismo, en ratas con isquemia cerebral se observa un aumento en la expresi\u00f3n de los tres eaats y de p2x7 en la sustancia blanca subcortical respecto a ratas control, que sugiere la implicaci\u00f3n de \u00e9stos en las alteraciones excitot\u00f3xicas isqu\u00e9micas. En conjunto, se ha observado que la sustancia blanca contiene eaats y p2x7, cuya expresi\u00f3n se altera en procesos patol\u00f3gicos experimentales de \u00edndole desmielinizante o isqu\u00e9mica en los que est\u00e1n implicados fen\u00f3menos excitot\u00f3xicos.
