Su reducido tama\u00f1o (por el que manifiestan efectos cu\u00e1nticos) junto a la flexibilidad que ofrecen en el dise\u00f1o de su estructura energ\u00e9tica las hace especialmente atractivas para su uso como componentes activos de una nueva generaci\u00f3n de dispositivos capaces de operar en la escala nanom\u00e9trica. Desde el punto de vista fundamental constituyen el marco id\u00f3neo para la exploraci\u00f3n y el estuido de fen\u00f3menos f\u00edsicos noveles, pues permiten el dise\u00f1o de condiciones \u00fanicas dif\u00edcilmente alcanzables en sistemas naturales. La distribuci\u00f3n espectral de energ\u00edas y la distribuciones de carga de electrones y huecos en la heteroestructura vienen determinadas por el efecto conjunto de diversas fuentes de confinamiento.  en esta tesis construimos una herramienta computacional que permite describir dichos efectos de forma conjunta y realista, y la empleamos tanto para resolver problemas concretos de inter\u00e9s aplicativo como para explorar terrenos de nueva f\u00edsica. Hacemos especial hincapi\u00e9 sobre la influencia del confinamiento diel\u00e9ctrico, proponiendo una mejora en el tratamiento computacional del potencial de auto energ\u00eda que nos permite evidenciar la riqueza de la f\u00edsica que emerge cuando el confinamiento diel\u00e9ctrico supera en relevancia al generalmente m\u00e1s conocido y determinante confinamiento
