Adem\u00e1s de novelista, est\u00e1 vinculado al mundo del periodismo y al mundo del g\u00e9nero \u00ednfimo, como letrista de cupl\u00e9s, figurinista y compositor.  ero \u00e1lvaro retana es un escritor que encarna la modernidad, entendida \u00e9sta como una lucha ideol\u00f3gica que cuestiona los valores burgueses estereotipados de la \u00e9poca de la restauraci\u00f3n, que satiriza a una sociedad todav\u00eda anclada en el siglo xix y que se cierra a los avances culturales de europa a causa de la estrechez de miras de instituciones como la iglesia, la medicina, el derecho o la pol\u00edtica. Un humorista y un creador de novelas acabadas, heredero de las estrategias literarias de la picaresca, rabelais, cervantes, de la novela finisecular francesa o gald\u00f3s, y constantemente preocupado para dotar al ser humano de una identidad basada en la libertad tal como la entiende la sociedad democr\u00e1tica de nuestros d\u00edas. Es un antecedente evidente a tener en cuenta dentro de la llamada \u00abhomocidad art\u00edstica hisp\u00e1nica\u00bb, entre los que destaca terenci moix, luis antonio de villena, pedro lemebel,
