Dentro del elemento religioso, es la conexi\u00f3n con los antiguos cultos mist\u00e9ricos la que ha conocido un an\u00e1lisis m\u00e1s profundo en lo que a la novela se refiere. Algunos autores, com kerenyi o, a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s, merkelbach, ve\u00edan un paralelo evidente entre la estructura narrativa de las obras novelescas y los mitos en que se basaban ciertos cultos de car\u00e1cter mist\u00e9rico. Merkelbach, incluso, lleg\u00f3 a considerarlas textos sagrados que deb\u00edan ser interpretados como la transposici\u00f3n simb\u00f3lica de rituales y ceremonias propias de este tipo de cultos. Estas teor\u00edas est\u00e1n actualmente en claro descr\u00e9dito, aunque debe reconocerse que lograron poner de relieve la importancia que el componente religioso y mist\u00e9rico tiene en la novela. la perspectiva dominante hoy d\u00eda explica la constante presencia en la trama de elementos pertenecientes al \u00e1mbito de la religi\u00f3n como consecuencia natural de la incardinaci\u00f3n de la novela griega en las corrientes religiosas de la \u00e9poca imperial, en la que se desarrollan las obras m\u00e1s importantes del g\u00e9nero. No debemos olvidar, sin embargo, la existencia de un sector de la cr\u00edtica af\u00edn a las teor\u00edas defendidas por merkelbach que, si bien reconoce la posibilidad de que \u00e9ste haya ido demasiado lejos en sus suposiciones, insiste en que el elemento religioso desempe\u00f1a un papel clave dentro del g\u00e9nero narrativo y no es simplemente reflejo del momento hist\u00f3rico en que se desarrolla. la presente tesis pretende ofrecer un estudio sistem\u00e1tico de todos los elementos religiosos presentes en las distintas novelas griegas, atendiendo tanto a su cronolog\u00eda como a su relaci\u00f3n con las corrientes religiosas y cultos de cada momento, para determinar as\u00ed su funci\u00f3n en el conjunto del relato y el porqu\u00e9 de su
