En la actualidad, el tratamiento utilizado con mas eficacia es el ifn-beta. El hecho de que este no ejerza ninguna acci\u00f3n directa en oligodendrocitos, ha condicionado que se atribuyese a sus acciones inmunomoduladoras su efecto beneficioso en el tratamiento de la ms. No obstante, las acciones perjudiciales de dicha citoquina en otras enfermedades autoinmunes como la diabetes mellitus tipo i, pone en tela de juicio dicha propiedad.  por otro lado, en las placas de desmielinizaci\u00f3n de pacientes de ms, se han descrito fen\u00f3menos de apoptosis en astrositos. Debido a la importante contribuci\u00f3n de este tipo celular glial en el mantenimiento de la bbb, en la reparaci\u00f3n tisular, en la regeneraci\u00f3n neuronal y en su capacidad para producir factores de crecimiento, el control de la supervivencia astrocitaria podr\u00eda tratarse de una posible diana terap\u00e9utica del ifn-beta.
