La dioecia ha evolucionado en acer de manera repetida, a partir de al menos tres sistemas heterodicog\u00e1micos. La evoluci\u00f3n de la unisexualidad estar\u00eda guiando la tendencia evolutiva hacia un aumento en el tama\u00f1o de las inflorescencias, y en el tama\u00f1o de las hojas por un mecanismo de evoluci\u00f3n correlacionada. Estudios microevolutivos en la especie acer opalus sugieren que la separaci\u00f3n de sexos dentro del g\u00e9nero podr\u00eda haber evolucionado por un mecanismo de especializaci\u00f3n sexual, que es consecuencia de la disminuci\u00f3n del \u00e9xito reproductivo femenino hacia el final de la floraci\u00f3n. En esta especie, la realizaci\u00f3n de un estudio detallado de fenolog\u00eda y un an\u00e1lisis de paternidad con marcadores moleculares muestran que el morfo protog\u00ednico est\u00e1 especializado en la funci\u00f3n femenina, y el prot\u00e1ndrico en la funci\u00f3n masculina; esto explicaria, seg\u00fan argumentos te\u00f3ricos, la presencia de machos en las poblaciones heterodicog\u00e1micas de esta especie la especializaci\u00f3n sexual de los morfos sexuales de acer opalus se encontr\u00f3 reflejada en un patr\u00f3n diferencial de herbivoria los morfos sexuales que m\u00e1s invirtieron en la funci\u00f3n masculina (machos y prot\u00e1ndricos) sufrieron m\u00e1s la herbivoria debida a los \u00e1caros, lo que demuestra que los distintos patrones de
