Los genes de los receptores de insulina y de igf tipo i se expresan de forma basicamente constante en todas las edades estudiadas del desarrollo de la retina neural de pollo. En la retina pigmentaria tambien se expresan durante el desarrollo los genes de proinsulina\/insulina, con un patron diferente al de la retina neural, y de igf-i. En el entorno de la neurorretina, en el humor vitreo de e6 y e8, se detecta un peptido con las caracteristicas de la proinsulina.  estos datos muestran que los productos de los genes de proinsulina\/insulina y de igf-i estan accesibles a la retina en desarrollo.  en cultivos organotipicos de retina neural la adiccion de insulina, proinsulina e igf-i estimulan la sintesis de dna y proteinas de forma dependiente de la concentracion de peptidos. Factores de la familia de los fgfs, incluidas las variantes fgf1-126, fgf1-139 y fgf1-154, y el fgf-2, son capaces de estimular la sintesis de dna en cultivos organotipicos de neurorretina. La presencia del epitelio pigmentario inhibe la sintesis de dna por la neurorretina en cultivo organotipico y estimula la diferenciacion neural de la misma.  el escenario que este trabajo empieza a dilucidar es un amplio conjunto de se\u00f1ales ambientales, procedentes unas de la retina pigmentaria y otras de la propia retina neural, que controlan los principales eventos de la neurogenesis,
