Desde que en 1895 wilhelm roentgen descubriera los rayos x y los empleara para conseguir im\u00e1genes del interior del cuerpo humano, los descubrimientos cient\u00edficos y tecnol\u00f3gicos a lo largo del siglo han permitido grandes avances en este campo, abriendo nuevos caminos para la detecci\u00f3n y el diagn\u00f3stico de  enfermedades.     dentro del campo de la imagen m\u00e9dica, la rama de la tomograf\u00eda por emisi\u00f3n es la que centra nuestro inter\u00e9s en este trabajo, m\u00e1s en particular la conocida como tomograf\u00eda por emisi\u00f3n de positrones (pet). Se trata de una modalidad funcional y, por tanto, es principalmente utilizada en el diagn\u00f3stico de enfermedades en donde una funci\u00f3n biol\u00f3gica es relevante, como pueden ser la enfermedad del alzheimer, aquellas coronarias o las oncol\u00f3gicas. la gran variedad de esc\u00e1neres existentes para la pet puede ser clasificada  en tres grupos seg\u00fan su finalidad: imagen de cuerpo entero, imagen neurol\u00f3gica e imagen de peque\u00f1os animales. De estas, las dos primeras, se realizan mediante esc\u00e1neres pet cl\u00ednicos, y son los sistemas m\u00e1s difundidos, ya que est\u00e1n concebidos para el diagn\u00f3stico m\u00e9dico. Sin embargo, no son adecuados para llevar a cabo estudios en peque\u00f1os animales, ya que no disponen ni de la resoluci\u00f3n espacial ni de la sensibilidad adecuada para su uso con animales debido a las peque\u00f1as dimensiones que \u00e9stos presentan, siendo adem\u00e1s muy  caros. en los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os el desarrollo de nuevos materiales en el campo de los cristales centelleadores, as\u00ed como grandes avances en fotomultiplicadores sensibles a posici\u00f3n ha abierto un nuevo campo para conseguir esc\u00e1neres de resoluci\u00f3n espacial alta adecuados para la pet en peque\u00f1os animales.
