Los cannabinoides act\u00faan mayoritariamente mediante su uni\u00f3n a receptores espec\u00edficos de membrana (receptores cb1 y cb2), pertenecientes a la familia de receptores asociados a prote\u00ednas g. El receptor cb1 se expresa en cerebro, especialmente en corteza, hipocampo y ganglios basales, lo que explicar\u00eda los efectos de los cannabinoides sobre la memoria, la conducta motora, etc. Existe hoy en d\u00eda un gran n\u00famero de estudios acerca de las  posibles aplicaciones terap\u00e9uticas de los cannabinoides. Algunos de estos estudios se refieren al papel que los cannabinoides podr\u00edan desempe\u00f1ar en el control de la supervivencia o muerte de c\u00e9lulas nerviosas. Los resultados presentados en esta tesis doctoral muestran que los endocannabinoides participan en el control de la proliferaci\u00f3n y diferenciaci\u00f3n de progenitores neurales corticales, durante el desarrollo y, del giro dentado del hipocampo, durante el desarrollo y tambi\u00e9n en el cerebro adulto. Adem\u00e1s, se ha demostrado que en un modelo de da\u00f1o excitot\u00f3xico, el sistema endocannabinoide est\u00e1 involucrado en la respuesta end\u00f3gena de los progenitores neurales encaminada hacia la reparaci\u00f3n el da\u00f1o neuronal. Y finalmente se ha puesto de manifiesto el papel de los cannabinoides sobre c\u00e9lulas tumorales troncales. En glioblastomas, los cannabinoides inhiben la capacidad gliomag\u00e9nica de las c\u00e9lulas troncales tumorales induciendo su diferenciaci\u00f3n. As\u00ed, los resultados de esta tesis doctoral suponen una contribuci\u00f3n al estudio de la expresi\u00f3n y funci\u00f3n del sistema endocannabinoide en progenitores neurales en diferentes
