A partir del paradigma de losmodelos de forma y apariencia, introducidos en la \u00faltima d\u00e9cada, se proponen extensiones algor\u00edtmicas que permiten mejorar suconfianbilidad y su invarianza a distintos tipos de rotaciones. Dichas extensiones se plantean de forma gen\u00e9rica, tal que los modelosconserven su relevancia original en otros \u00e1mbitos de aplicaci\u00f3n.La validaci\u00f3n experimental de las t\u00e9cnicas propuestas se ha realizado en tomo al an\u00e1lisis facial. Este campo ha cobrado especialrelevancia en los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os, con un importante crecimiento de su mercado a nivel internacional. Uno de los hechos m\u00e1sdestacables es la reciente adopci\u00f3n de biometr\u00eda facial como tecnolog\u00eda de base en los nuevos pasaportes, relegando as\u00ed a un segundoplano a otras modalidades como la basada en las huellas dactilares y en el iris, a pesar de ofrecer estas \u00faltimas menores tasas deerror. Siendo la forma natural de identificaci\u00f3n en el ser humano, el reconocimiento facial se ha visto favorecido por ser percibidocomo menos intrusivo que otras modalidades y por ofrecer, en teor\u00eda, la posibilidad de operar sin necesidad de colaboraci\u00f3n de lapersona a identificar.En el cap\u00edtulo 1 se hace una breve introducci\u00f3n a la biometr\u00eda y se describen los componentes b\u00e1sicos de un sistema autom\u00e1tico dereconocimiento facial, contextualizando as\u00ed los modelos de forma y apariencia. Concretamente, los modelos activos de forma (asmpor sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s) constituyen el principal componente metodol\u00f3gico de esta tesis y su teor\u00eda se introduce someramente en elcap\u00edtulo 2.Los asm permiten la segmentaci\u00f3n y an\u00e1lisis autom\u00e1tico de im\u00e1genes a trav\u00e9s de un m\u00e9todo generativo. Introducidos en 1992 (port.
