Algunas leguminosas transportan casi el 100 % de este nitr\u00f3geno fijado como ureidos (alantoina y alatoato), mientras que otras lo hacen en forma de amidas (asparragina y glutamina). Estos compuestos han de ser degradados en las partes a\u00e9reas de la planta para que el nitr\u00f3geno y el carbono que contienen puedan ser reasimilados en los tejidos en desarrollo. El nitr\u00f3geno contenido en los ureidos puede ser liberado en forma de amonio o urea mediante reacciones secuenciales que transformar\u00edan la alatoina en glioxilato. en este trabajo se ha estudiado la degradaci\u00f3n de alantoina y alantoato en plantas de jud\u00eda (phaseolus vulgaris), una leguminosa que transporta el nitr\u00f3geno fijado en los n\u00f3dulos en forma de ureidos. Se han purificado hasta monogeneidad electrofor\u00e9tica dos prote\u00ednas capaces de catalizar la degradaci\u00f3n de la alantoina. Estas prote\u00ednas presentan caracter\u00edsticas cin\u00e9ticas similares, aunque tienen tama\u00f1os diferentes y una distribuci\u00f3n en los distintos \u00f3rganos de la planta de jud\u00eda desigual. Se ha amplificado y clonado un \u00fanico adnc que codifica la alatoinasa de jud\u00eda. La enzima que cataliza la degradaci\u00f3n de alatoato se ha purificado parcialmente y se ha caracterizado. Esta es la primera vez, que una actividad que cataliza la degradaci\u00f3n de alatoato se ha caracterizado in vitro en plantas. Los niveles de ureidos, los de ambas actividades enzim\u00e1ticas, as\u00ed como el nivel de expresi\u00f3n del gen que codifica la alantoinasa se han determinado en diversos tejidos de plantas de jud\u00eda, as\u00ed como en las plantas cultivadas en diversas condiciones.
