Esta neurotoxicidad consiste en la p\u00e9rdida de terminales dopamin\u00e9rgicas y seroton\u00e9rgicas, que se recuperan, en gran parte, meses despu\u00e9s. Se ha demostrado una estrecha relaci\u00f3n entre la producci\u00f3n de especies reactivas de ox\u00edgeno y la lesi\u00f3n neurot\u00f3xica. se ha realizado un profundo estudio del mecanismo o mecanismos por los cuales los derivados anfetam\u00ednicos ejercen su efecto oxidante en el terminal nervioso. Entre estos mecanismos figura la activaci\u00f3n del receptor nicot\u00ednico alfa-7. As\u00ed un antagonista alfa 7 impide la producci\u00f3n de radicales libres por anfetaminas.
