En esta tesis se ha examinado si la radiaci\u00f3n ultravioleta causa mortalidad directa en poblaciones. Este estudio ha demostrado que la radiaci\u00f3n ultravioleta causa mortalidad importante de fitopl\u00ed\u00a0ncton de diferentes \u00e1reas del oc\u00e9ano atl\u00e1ntico, del mar mediterr\u00e1neo y del oc\u00e9ano ant\u00e1rtico. Tambi\u00e9n se ha demostrado la diferente sensibilidad que presentan los grupos de fitoplancton a la radiaci\u00f3n uv siendo el fitoplancton m\u00e1s peque\u00f1o(pico-fitoplancton) m\u00e1s vulnerable que fitoplancton de mayor  tama\u00f1o. Se discute que la letalidad de la radiaci\u00f3n ultravioleta en comunidades de pico-fitoplancton del oc\u00e9ano atl\u00e1ntico es dependiente de las dosis recibidas, en cambio, para comunidades de mayor tama\u00f1o, como las de la ant\u00e1rtica, la intensidad de la radiaci\u00f3n, independientemente del tiempo de exposici\u00f3n, es el factor determinante de su sensibilidad a la radiaci\u00f3n ultravioleta, este estudio identifica que el crecimiento de las poblaciones del fitoplancton ant\u00e1rtico est\u00e1 controlado por la radiaci\u00f3n ultravioleta con inhibiciones de biomasas por encima del 80-90%. Este estudio tambi\u00e9n ha demostrado que la transferencia de radicales oh, generados por la radiaci\u00f3n ultravioleta, desde la atm\u00f3sfera hacia la superficie del oc\u00e9ano causa mortalidad en comunidades de fitoplancton de aguas tropicales, templadas y ant\u00e1rticas. el trabajo presentado en esta tesis muestra la importancia de la radiaci\u00f3n ultravioleta como factor que induce mortalidad en el fitoplancton, su influencia en el balance del crecimiento neto de estas poblaciones, as\u00ed como las consecuencias que se derivan en la cadena tr\u00f3fica.
