Gracias a su capacidad tamponadora de calcio, las mitocondrias participan en la regulaci\u00f3n de distintos procesos dependientes de calcio citos\u00f3lico como por ejemplo, la contracci\u00f3n o la secreci\u00f3n.  por otro lado, en el interior de las mitocondrias el calcio ejerce funciones reguladoras de la actividad mitocondrial, regulando la piruvato deshidrogenasa y dos enzimas limitantes del ciclo de krebs. Sin embargo, un aumento excesivo del calcio mitocondrial puede llevar a la muerte celular al estimular la liberaci\u00f3n de factores promotores de apoptosis, por lo que es importante regular la captaci\u00f3n de calcio de las mitocondrias.  esta captaci\u00f3n de calcio mitocondrial se produce a trav\u00e9s de un canal localizado en la membrana interna mitocondrial, denominado uniportador de calcio mitocondrial. La modulaci\u00f3n de este canal fue ampliamente estudiada durante las \u00faltimas d\u00e9cadas del siglo pasado, y es bastante compleja, puesto que algunos activadores pueden convertirse en inhibidores en funci\u00f3n de su concentraci\u00f3n.  en esta tesis doctoral describimos una nueva serie de potentes activadores del uniportador de calcio mitocondrial, capaces de aumentar m\u00e1s de 20 veces la velocidad de captaci\u00f3n de calcio a trav\u00e9s del mismo. Se trata por un lado de una serie de flavonoides naturales, ampliamente distribuidos en los alimentos de origen vegetal, y por otro, de una serie de agonistas de receptores de estr\u00f3genos. Tambi\u00e9n describimos el efecto inhibitorio sobre la captaci\u00f3n de calcio mitocondrial de antagonistas de receptores de estr\u00f3genos.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Datos acad\u00e9micos de la
