Esta aparece articulada como una relaci\u00f3n de exterioridad entre finito e infinito, una relaci\u00f3n de caracter\u00edsticas precisas que viene determinada sobre todo por su \u00edndole temporal. En esta relaci\u00f3n se condensa la respuesta levinasiana a la herencia filos\u00f3fica de la modernidad. Levinas busca una v\u00eda para salir de la inmanencia porque considera que la trascendencia cognoscitiva es insuficiente. Seg\u00fan levinas, la tradici\u00f3n filos\u00f3fica occidental ha consistido en una destrucci\u00f3n de la trascendencia porque se ha ce\u00f1ido a los l\u00edmites del ser entendido como actualidad y presencia ante la conciencia. Esa es la idea de ser aislada en s\u00ed misma, sin referencia al infinito. Para superar los l\u00edmites de la presencia y salir de la inmanencia es preciso poner en relaci\u00f3n la idea de ser con la idea de infinito: esa es la idea filos\u00f3fica de criatura. S\u00f3lo as\u00ed la finitud del ser adquire una consistencia mayor que el estatuto de reflejo en la conciencia. La referencia al infinito se produce en la inmediatez de la perturbaci\u00f3n \u00e9tica dle yo que consiste en un movimiento m\u00e1s cognitivo que el conocimiento: el deseo que enciende la idea de infinito descubierta en el rostro del otro que se aproxima. Esta versi\u00f3n del yo hacia el otro es el tiempo porque el tiempo introduce la diferencia en el seno del yo de modo que \u00c2\u00bfyo soy yo? Pasa a ser \u00c2\u00bfyo soy para el otro?.
